Over the weekend the first-term incumbent Labor government, led by Premier Daniel Andrews, successfully won a second four-year term in government, defeating the Liberal/National Coalition, led by opposition leader Matthew Guy. Minor party the Greens also contested the election and sought to increase their share of seats in both the lower and upper houses.
A huge Labor majority is assured with 51 seats already won, while the coalition has 24, the Greens one and one independent, in Shepparton.
Labor has promised to borrow big to pay for a swag of pledges that it promises will shape Victoria for future generations. It's spending $1.5 billion on a new hospital in Footscray, which will be finished by 2025. Meanwhile Frankston Hospital will get a $526-million upgrade, and hundreds of millions will also be splashed on hospitals in Morwell and Maryborough. $200 million will also be used for 1,000 new public housing properties. The North East Link is also on the agenda, which will connect the Eastern Freeway and the M80 Ring Road at Greensborough. The Government is promising to put that project out to tender within the next 100 days. Works will also continue on major transport projects such as the $11 billion Metro Tunnel, as will upgrades to the M80 Ring Road and the West Gate Tunnel project.
This is all good news for Victorians overall, with the infrastructure boom generating thousands of new jobs and make space for more population growth in the coming years.
